Preparation and Anticipation
11/6/18
Today is the day we are planning on contacting all of our potential mentors. I am nervous that my first choice won't want an intern because she does tend to travel a lot. But other than that, I am excited to go to Austin and take pictures! I have now found three potential photographers that I would like to intern with. So far I am interested in interning with Pooneh Ghana, a concert and artist based photographer in Austin, Kelsie Raney, a freelance portrait photographer based in Austin and Angela Betancourt, a music and portrait photographer.

For my internship, I am going down to Austin Texas. My mentor owns a photography business called Flower Girl Photography. I found my mentor on instagram and really liked her style of photography, I emailed her and she texted me back, we have been talking all the time about all time about what we want to do and all the concepts we want to try. During the process of finding a mentor, I never really had any problems other than the first person I emailed not responding, other than that, Kelsie responded as soon as I emailed her and I had it all set in stone before Christmas break.
I am fully ready to drive down to Texas and take pictures with my mentor Kelsie Raney, we are planning to take photos of models, her clients, and maybe a wedding! I have texted and factetimed with my mentor for many months and we are both looking so forward to this awesome experience we are about to go through.

LINK starts in about a week and I am so excited! Photography is something that I am very passionate about and my mentor is so excited to broaden my knowledge. I am hoping to learn a lot about editing in Lightroom and also about the settings on my camera and how they all work. From her perspective, I hope that I am helpful to her when she needs it and she is willing to teach me all that she knows and wants to answer my questions.

Reflection: 5/13/19
LINK is a three week on Internship where you have the opportunity to go into the field of your choice. I have always loved photography so I knew that I wanted to go intern with a photographer, and since we had the chance to travel I figured Austin would be the perfect destination because of the fact that my family lives there. I interned with Kelsie Raney from Flower Girl Photography. My mentor truly helped me grasp real life photography skills while also making it super fun. She hired models for me to practice on so their wouldn't be any pressure to mess up. We explored so many concepts and the crazy weather changes allowed for her to teach me about different lighting and how to adjust the settings on my camera to cater towards darker days, when there is overcast or if I am shooting in the evening. A big thing I had never really though about was angles, I usually shoot head on but she really opened my mind up to exploring new angles. Getting really low to the ground and shooting up or head on from there, or standing on top of something and shooting down, even moving around the subject to get different sides of them, switching up the angles gives you way more variety and really made me look at a simple photoshoot very differently. It also allows you to take way more pictures, you have such a different view and the pictures can look like they were taken in completely different locations. Another thing we tried to play a lot with was poses. We did a lot of "pinterest research" on different poses, and again when you switch up poses a lot, just like angles, you have a lot more variety with your final photos. She also taught me a bit of Adobe Lightroom and how to make a picture look a specific way, have a certain mood. She gave me tips on how to make a group of photos look cohesive if they are for a client. That brings us to clients. I tagged along with her to quite a few appointments she had with families and a lot of dog portraits. This was very important for me because depending on the situation, I have a hard time telling people what to do. Telling people how to pose or stand or the face they should make was a really big challenge for me but watching her giving models and clients advise on how to pose really gave me some confidence to do it myself, towards the end I really noticed myself opening up to models and giving them my input on what I think they should do to make a nice photo.

Although photography was the main priority during my time in Austin, I also spent a lot of time with Kelsie doing things that weren't photography related. I was born in Austin and I have been going back to visit family every year for long periods of time, but Kelsie really opened my eyes to how cool Austin really is. I spent some time with her and her friends and they really inspired me to think about Austin as a place for the next step in my life. I never really thought I would move to Austin because it's in Texas and Texas is hot and there are a lot of people; that just didn't really seem like something I would be interested in but it was so cool to see it through the eyes of a millennial rather than with my family. They showed me how much culture there is in Austin and how colorful and fun it is. Overall this was an amazing experience and I couldn't have asked for anything better, I treasure every experience I had and I will for many years to come.

My Project
For my project, I chose to gather some of my favorite pictures from each photoshoot and put them into a little gallery, then I wrote a description about each shoot, angles, posing, location, lighting, editing, etc. There is also some behind the scenes pictures. Here is the link!!!
