My Story: Spring Downpour
Project Reflection
During this project, the first thing we learned about a theory called the Hero’s Journey, made up by Joseph Campbell. To deepen our knowledge about the Hero’s Journey, we read lots of article. Also we were introduced to archetypes and rights of passages that the hero encounters during their journey. We then read a book called The Alchemist written by Paulo Coelho. This book was about a boy who had a dream about finding a treasure at the pyramids. Throughout his adventure to find his treasure, he goes through the Hero’s Journey. Not only did we read articles and books, we also watched videos and movies. We watched Star Wars, then identified the different stages of the Hero’s Journey and how it relates to the movie. Basically, all of this was leading up to us telling our own stories. For this section of the project, we all thought of a story that we have experienced in our lives and then told them over and over to refine how we were standing, and moving (Poise), how we were speaking (Voice), how we were relating our stories to ourselves and our passions (Life), speaking directly to the audience and having good eye contact (Eye contact), How we were moving ourselves and moving our bodies intentionally, (Gestures), and finally, how fast we were talking (Speed). This is called PVLEGS, and it is how we learned how to present in front of an audience and look professional while doing it.
During this project, I think I have grown as a reader. Reading the Alchemist was pretty easy, but reading Siddhartha was a lot more complicated. During the book, it was very easy for me to be reading, and not comprehending what it was saying. I would start thinking about something completely different than what the text was saying. The deeper I got into the book, the more I paid attention. , It was still not my favorite book, and it wasn’t the easiest book to read, but I definitely think that I have grown to be more concentrated, not be as distracted, and also not procrastinate as much.
I think that I learned lots of different lessons throughout this project but the biggest lesson that I will take with me into future public speaking is PVLEGS. I do not enjoy public speaking and this is a good method to think about when preparing to speak in front of people and also when you are actually presenting. It is so simple yet it can change the way you talk in front of people so dramatically. You learn to have good posture and to gesture when appropriate, and also to speak at a reasonable speed as well as a good volume. It teaches you how to be passionate about what you are saying and to stand up proud while doing it. I think that this will help me be more confident and to hide all of the nervousness.
